About Canesten Thrush Duo
Canesten Thrush Duo is a dual action treatment that treats the infection from within with the oral 150mg fluconazole capsule whilst the clotrimazole 2% cream is applied directly to the affected area to help ease the external symptoms. This can be used by men and women for thrush symptoms.
How to use Canesten Thrush Duo
The fluconazole tablet should be taken with a glass of water and can be taken at any time of day, with or without a meal. The cream is applied thinly and evenly to the affected area 2-3 times a day and gently rubbed in, used until the thrush symptoms completely disappear.
When not to use Canesten Thrush Duo
You should not use Canesten Thrush duo if you are unsure of what is causing your symptoms or have other symptoms aside from those listed on our medical information page. If you have an allergy to fluconazole, clotrimazole or similar medications or any of the ingredients in the products such as lactose you should also not use this product.
You should not use Canesten Thrush duo if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
The manufacturer also advises to speak to your GP if you are under 16 or over 60.
If you are taking other medications please read the patient information leaflet for further details.
How effective is Canesten Thrush Duo?
Symptoms usually improve within a few days of using the medication although sometimes can take up to a week. If symptoms have not cleared after 7 days then you should seek advice from your GP or sexual health clinic:

Possible side effects of Canesten Thrush Duo
Common side effects (occurring in one in ten patients) of fluconazole include nausea, stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, wind, rash and headache. However, these side effects are usually mild and don't tend to last long.
Side effects from the clotrimazole 2% cream are uncommon, however local skin irritation such as stinging or redness is possible.
For further information please refer to the manufacturer's patient information leaflet.
Allergy and serious reactions are rare, however if you develop a rash, swelling, swallowing or breathing problems after starting to use Canesten Thrush Duo you should stop and seek medical attention.
Canesten cream may damage the latex in contraceptives such as condoms and diaphragms so it is recommended not to use these whilst using the product and for 5 days afterwards.
